Woke up to stampede outside our room as the other hostel residents rose at 7am. As we’re the second to last room by the exit everyone has to walk past our room to get to breakfast, or go out, or go to the bathroom. Fun huh?
Leasurly breakfast at the hostel (not a huge choice) watching a squirrel run up and down the power lines.
Today we thought we would try the walk into the city and ended up walking miles. It was A challenge thanks to the lack of pavements, and those that are there are often blocked with trees.
We found a great second hand book shop just outside the city and picked up a couple of new books. This is great news for me since the death of my Kindle has left me borrowing Frankie’s and dealing with her reading choices! We also found the fantastic Nancy Chandlers Map of Chiang Mai which I’m sure will be invaluable and makes a great souvenir.
We spent the day walking around the city and getting an idea of the layout. In the evening we went to the Sunday Night Market. This was very similar to the Saturday Night Market, with many of the same stalls, just in a different place. Again, it was very touristy.
Sitting on the side of the road eating corn for dinner from one of the street vendors we witnessed our second car accident as a tuk tuk misjudged a gap and was sideswiped by a 4x4. Thankfully the traffic moves very slowly so there was no real danger, just damaged lights and paintwork.
Frankie got foot massage while I enjoyed a read and a great coffee while watching the market pass by.
We went for a beer at Johns place which has a view down to the city Gate and onto the market.
Tuk tuk prices go up after dark, but it still costs us less than three pounds to get back to the hostel!
Frankie’s summary of our travels so far.
Here’s the link to catch up on my diary of our travels so far.
